This 1930s French painting belongs to my most treasured possessions. It is signed and dated but unfortunately I cannot decipher the signature. On the back there are labels from a well known French auction house but so far I have not got round to contacting their fine art department.
The perfect balance of abstraction and pictorial interpretation fascinates me. The abstract shapes and colours form a daunting landscape through which the two figures and their donkeys wander. The subject matter is open to interpretation: Is it a religious scene depicting the holy couple on their way to Jerusalem or does the scene show to African travelers on their way to a bazaar?
